Hotel Chain and Loyalty Program
The hotel belongs to the multinational Marriott International group, and its own brand Autograph Collection. The Marriott Bonvoy loyalty program is applied.
The hotel was built in 1932, and constructed in neo-classical and art deco style.
Hotel lobby
I arrived to the hotel at around a lunch time, and was welcome by the doorman dressed in white uniform with shorts, long knee socks and pith helmet. Very nice touch for a hotel which remembers the glamor of the old times. I then proceeded directly to the front desk. No welcome drink was offered on check-in, however the process was friendly, smooth and fast.
The interior of the lobby is very nice with high ceiling, Roman-like columns and vintage ceiling lights. What invites you at the hotel is also a nice aroma spreading around the whole property.
There is a reception, porter service and concierge service desk at the main lobby.
Location
The hotel is situated in the KL Sentral area, just opposite the railway station. KLIA (Kuala Lumpur International Airport) is about an hour drive by taxi. Bukit Bintang area, Petronas Towers or KL Tower are located just 10 to 15 minutes by taxi, depending on traffic. A monorail or MRT trains (metro system) are also a good option to travel within the city, if you do not want to spend much time sitting in a cab.
For the hotel guests there is The Majestic Luxury Coach (shuttle service) which operates to the Bukit Bintang area regularly.
Room
The hotel has 300 rooms and suites in two buildings, the Majestic Wing and Tower Wing. My room was located at the Tower Wing. Very comfortable room. Decorated in dark brown and beige, the furniture is modern and practical. There is large sofa, king-size bed with plenty of pillows, work desk, and standing clothes hanger. Nespresso coffee machine and a kettle are at your disposal. The large flat TV is wall-mounted.
The bathroom of the room is a big plus. It is divided into the toilet, forest shower corner and an area with a large bathtub. It has two wash basins and tv mounted inside the wall. Nice to watch a favourite movie from the comfort of your bathtub.
I stayed on the 8th floor, and unfortunately there was a bit unpleasant sound coming into the room from the outside event playing loud music during a day. The other night, there was a party outside till almost a midnight, and the sound of the drums was heard and felt inside the room. Not very good experience for the hotel guests.
Restaurants and food
There is 6 restaurants and lounges at the hotel. Contango serves contemporary Western, Malay, Chinese, Japanese and Thai cuisine. Colonial Cafe offers authentical classical cuisine from the colonial era. The Bar, the music bar offers famous old time cocktails in stylish atmosphere. The Tea Lounge is an ideal place to enjoy English Afternoon Tea. The Smoke House is a private dining room with a personal chef. Advance reservations are therefore essentail here. The Orchid Conservatory, the botanical „wonder“ – the only one of this kind in the country. Guests can book this place for up to 15 persons to enjoy an afternoon tea, and intimate lunch or diner.
Leisure facilities
The hotel has a swimming pool located on the 4th floor of the Tower Wing, the gym or Truefitt & Hill – the gentlemen’s grooming services shop.
The Drawing Room located in the Majesty Wing is a private lounge with colonial nostalgia, and offers typical English traditions as Afternoon Tea.
The Cigar Room is an essential experience for cigar aficionados, and classic and luxurious smoking jackets are provided upon request. Scotch, American or Japanese whiskies or vintage cocktails can be enjoyed here.
The Screening Room is a private cinema showing classic black & white movies from the 30s and onward.
The wi-fi connection is not very stable. Sometimes it works very fast, sometimes you need to wait for the ages until your required page downloads.
